To ensure we focus on our collective “priesthood” during this 50th Jubilee celebration, we share honorary parishioner, Henri Ser’s reports from our front line. Henri is one of Australia’s leading schleppers:
- Pleasant night out on the bus. Unfortunately still a busy night. No pizzas tonight. Was prepared for that and bought nearly 200 hot dogs, which all went. Food ran out about 35 minutes after arriving. Went and purchased fish n chips for distribution. They went down well.
- A young lady came with a box of condiments. She stated she was going back to Laos and instead of throwing them away felt I could use it for the attendees to our food service. The box contents vanished quicker than a seagull swooping for food. X told me he slept on your porch last night.
- Last night at the bus we had a few incidents. P was drugged to the max as was his partner H. They tried to rob a helper by H acting sexy towards peter whilst P was trying to pick his pocket. I saw what was happening and yelled out to the helper that he was wanted on the bus. P and H got upset and started to abuse me. Y came and they went away.
- Another young fellow tried to steal our bread. Stopped him. Someone else tried to steal the made up sandwiches. Shekels were given out. Bought extra milk, food.
- Attended the bus on Fitzroy Street, as X messaged me that he met a male called T at the food bus on Wednesday and that T was feeling threatened whilst staying in the area.
- Spoke to K, told him to keep quiet as he was unfortunately delusional and telling people he was an undercover policeman besides other identities. Organized for a mental health outreach worker to attend to him.
Saw a few people besides T as well and then called it a day at 4 pm.
- Assisted R by taking him to Mag court as he was on crutches. Picked him up early in the day from Preston. His sister then took him home after his court matter. B was also in court and I spoke on his behalf to get an adjournment as his lawyer was busy in another court. The adjournment was granted but the Magistrate still wanted to speak to his lawyer to read him the riot act as he was scheduled to go ahead with his matter that day and he already had 3 adjournments. So I left R at court after buying him lunch.
- E discharged from hospital. Kept wallet closed. Otherwise he will become a nuisance.
- If I don’t see you tomorrow I wish you a happy decade to come. The last decade was a building block I feel for the coming one. As Superman said” Up Up and Away”. Finishing off for today. Too hot. Not many people out. The hotel is quiet like an upper-class boarding house.
- Took the Hopemobile out and gave out all the food that was left on bus to people in the streets of South Melbourne and Park Towers.
Hard work by ones self. Happy Christmas Eve.
- A female, came to the bus with all her clothes ripped as she was in a fight. Had no clothes to give her except for my Santa jacket. Her neck and body was bruised.
- Year is coming to an end thankfully. But another one starts again soon.
To say it was a year gone by quickly would be a lie. It has been a struggle this year both financially and with the clienteles’ demands.
This is the first year that I felt threatened on the streets due to the introduction of cheaper drugs and more psychotic ones. First year in 15 years that I have been attacked. Threatened. Spat on.
Have had a few successes and a lot of failures so to speak. But there’s still hope for the failures to be successes in the near future. Lots of deaths this year as well. Over 20. Maybe they count as successes as their tortured life is finally over and possibly a better one will start for them.
Food buses did their jobs 3 times a week. Last food bus for me is this coming Friday, Boxing Day. Then it’s 3 weeks off thankfully in regards to food bus as I’m burnt out and exhausted. Next year hopefully will do a night in Port/South Melbourne. Feel guilty having left my roots where it all started for me with the late Maureen 16/17 years ago. They were exciting adventurous days.
2009 was a hard year – financially. Anyhow what with your fundraising person and more volunteers on the way, the school being converted into housing and my continued support of you I feel 2010 will be a great year For all of us. Honestly.
G-d bless you and all.
