Don't know about the al-Zarqawi business. Don't know what to say. Need we say anything? Probably not.

Zarqawi was a notoriously enigmatic figure - a man who was everywhere yet nowhere - Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, barely forty an barely literate, a Bedouin from the Bani Hassan tribe, was until recently almost completely unknown outside his native Jordan.

Then, on Feb. 5, 2003, Secretary of State Colin Powell catapulted him onto the world stage.

In his address to the UN, making the case for war in Iraq, Powell identified al-Zarqawi - mistakingly as it turned out - as the crucial link between al-Qaeda and Saddam Hussein's regime.

Subsequently, al-Zarqawi became a leading figure in the insurgency in Iraq - and in November of last year he also brought his jihardist revolution back home, as the architect of three lethal hotel bombings in Amman, Jordan.

His notoriety grew with every atrocity he perpetrated, yet western and middle-eastern officials remained bedevilled by a single question.

Who was he? Was he al-Qaeda's point man in Iraq, as the Bush Administration argued repeatedly?

Or, was he, as a retired Israeli intelligence officer said not long ago, "a staunch rival of the bin Laden family, whose importance (Zarqawi's) the US exaggerated in order to validate a link between al-Qaeda and pre-war Iraq, and to put a non-Iraqi face on a complex insurgency.

That insurgency will go on. There is no such thing as Zarqawism.

What Zarqawi is will die with him said a Jordanian intell. official.

On the other hand, bin Laden is, like Karl Marx, an ideological thinker.

Marxism flourished well after Marx's death. And whether bin Laden is killed or not, al-Qaedaism will survive him.

The father of one young american beheaded by Zarqawi helps me out here.

He's not dancing up and down at the news of Zarqawi's death by 'smart' bomb. "That's revenge", he said on National TV, "and just fuels the mad spiral of killings and reprisals."

Catholics are caught here in a deft stick.

Like everyone else in the world, we have blood in our veins and we like it to stay there.

"You beauty!" We catholics may well react to the news of a bad guy's execution.

BUT, dammit! We are also bound to ask the Jesus question: "What good is it if Zarqawi is dead but you've lost yourself?"

3000 americans died on 9/11. 10,000 Iraqi's and Afgans are colateral damage (mainly civilians too!) Thousands of coalition troops are dead and tens of thousands are totally and permanently incapacitated.

Just, maybe, it's not unaustralian to stop partying over Zarqawi's death and use aussie nous to help clean up the Iraq mess - and win the Soccer too! Bob.
